Stratford is one of the districts in London’s East End and located roughly 10 km northeast of Charing Cross, within the London Borough of Newham. Like other localities in the borough, Stratford went through a period of transition from being an industrial area that relied heavily on the Royal Group of Docks to one that was characterised by its retail and leisure amenities. Modern-day Stratford is considered one of East End’s major destinations for commercial, cultural, and leisurely pursuits and has benefited greatly from the residential and commercial developments associated with the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. It has also become one of London’s central business centres and is now home to the usual high-rise housing and office properties associated with that status. Stratford is served by two major rail stations: the main Stratford station, which serves as an important interchange for the overground and underground networks, while the Stratford International station is on the High Speed 1 line and provides access to the DLR as well.

Properties in Stratford have access to most modern options of waste disposal, but they are particularly benefited by the proximity to numerous licenced waste facilities and recycling centres located along Newham’s border with Tower Hamlets. Most of them deal exclusively with builder’s rubble and construction waste, but one of the facilities in Canning Town is able to take general household and commercial rubbish. There are also another two in the same area that offer recycling services for metals. Where are the nearest recycling centres in Stratford

There are no reuse and recycling centres (RRC) in Stratford, however the nearest facility, Leyton’s civic amenity site on Gateway Road, is close enough to be used in situations where transferring your own waste is an absolute necessity, such when unwanted furniture or appliances need to be removed from a property and wait times for the council’s bulky waste collections are too long or their services are not adequate. The Gateway Road RRC is open from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Tuesdays to Sundays, and can accept most common types of household refuse and recycling outside of the usual exceptions, like tyres, hard plastics (unless in the form of reusable items), and hazardous waste. Rubble is also accepted at the site, but soil will need to be taken to another facility.

What rubbish collection services are available in Stratford?

Households in Stratford are all eligible for Newham’s free collections for general waste and recycling. The collections are made at least once a week, but properties along the district’s busiest roads may have collections twice a day. The council also offers bulky waste collections for larger household items, such as furniture (sofas, beds, etc.) or white goods (fridges, freezers, etc.). The service costs £20 per collection of up to six items, but Stratford residents may have to wait long periods for the items to be removed from their property and will have to do the heavy lifting and put them outside of the property themselves.
