Poplar is one of the districts of London’s East End, within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It was one of the designated major centres in the London Plan and remains one of the East End’s busiest areas due to its varied selection of residential properties and extensive commercial options. Poplar High Street, which was previously the district’s main area, is still home to several of its most well-known landmarks, while Chrisp Street Market is not only famous for being the first purpose-built shopping area for pedestrians in the UK, but also for its diverse assortment of shops, retail outlets, and market stalls. There are numerous pubs and cafés in and around the market as well, which cater mainly to residents of the substantial residential developments that surround it. Poplar does not have its own railway or tube station, but is connected to other districts in east London via its DLR station. The nearest tube station is Canary Wharf, while the closest railway station is Limehouse.

Where are the nearest recycling centres in Poplar

Tower Hamlets’ local RRC is actually located within the same postcode district as Poplar, which makes it the nearest civic amenity site for addresses in the district by far. The facility is located on Yabsley Street, just a short distance south of the Blackwall DLR station, and conveniently open seven days a week, from 8 AM to 8 PM (9 to 6 on weekends). They are also able to take most common types of household refuse and recycling, with the only exceptions being tyres, plasterboard, liquids, and hazardous waste, but commercial waste of any sort will not be accepted. Alternatively, Poplar residents may also choose to use the local recycling bank, which is located on Dee Street, for smaller batches of recyclable items and materials.

Tower Hamlets Council offers free weekly or daily time-banded collections (based on street) for general refuse and recycling for households in Poplar, while business owners can sign up for similar services at very reasonable prices. In addition, the borough council also has weekly collections for garden waste and food waste (only for street-level residential properties) and offers bulky waste collections for large items, like sofas, beds, and certain household appliances (white goods). The bulky waste removal service, however, is limited to only two collections of up to five items per year for every household and advises Poplar residents to instead make arrangements with a licenced waste management company in case additional collections are required.
